DALLAS LOVE FIELD HISTORY

Love Field was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established by the Army after the United States entry into World War I in April 1917. It was opened as a primary pilot training field on October 19, 1917, constructed just southeast of Bachman Lake. It was named after First Lieutenant Moss Lee Love, of the U.S. Army 11th Cavalry, who died in an airplane crash near San Diego, California on 4 September 1913, becoming the 10th fatality in U.S. army aviation history. His Wright Model C biplane crashed during practice for his Military Aviator Test. On 19 October 1917, the newly-opened Dallas Love Field was named in his honor. Joe Baugher lists the fatal aircraft accident for this date as being Burgess Model J, Signal Corps 18, which dove into the ground killing its pilot.
